the chronicles of The Bump and the smitten parents who already love him/her

Growth scan this morning. I'm in my 34th week and baby is measuring in the 85th percentile at 2.4 kilograms.  That's pretty big!  Chris said my blood sugar levels were looking good and that he would be "staggered" if I needed to be prescribed insulin.  That said, he also said that, although we will monitor things, there is little doubt that I would need to be induced at 38 weeks (if on insulin) or at 39 weeks (if not on insulin).  39 weeks is Christmas week!

Next growth scan is in two weeks and then weekly visits after that - we are definitely at the pointy end of this pregnancy!

Ok so today I found my first stretch marks on my lower belly - at 32 weeks and 6 days pregnant.  They aren't huge and I know I'm being vain and silly complaining about them, but I was very sad.  It feels like this body doesn't belong to me anymore!  There is not one bodily system that has gone unscathed through this pregnancy:

  • Gastrointestinal / Digestive -  constipation. gas.
  • Urinary - hello, going to the bathroom a million times a day!
  • Cardiovascular / Respiratory/ Circulatory system- my heart has to deal with pumping an increased volume of blood around the body and so I'm huffing and puffing to do the simplest things like climbing one flight of stairs or even walking up a gentle incline.  I have to sleep on only the left side of my body so as to increase the blood flow to the placenta and not compress the vena cava.
  • Endocrine - Sigh, gestational diabetes.  Hormonal mood swings.
  • Immune / Lymphatic - depressed immune response (massive hayfever this year) and increased lymph in my body.
  • Musculo skeletal  - ligaments and tendons softening and stretching and making my lower back very very sore.  Insane wake-me-up-in-agony cramps in my calves.
  • Nervous - headaches, eyesight deteriorating, baby brain, highly emotional!
  • Integumentary -  the ridiculous itchiness of my skin in the first and second trimester and now newly arrived stretch marks. I must confess my skin (generally) has continued to be clear and glowy and my nails are indestrucitble.  I've also not noticed any difference in my hair.
  • Reproductive - I'm growing a baby! :)

Despite all these "side-effects" of pregnancy, I'm actually having a great pregnancy!  I still look like me, I am still working full time, am still active, and feel all maternal and loving and amazed at the precious life inside my belly.  I know many other women have it much much worse (for example, 9 month long morning sickness, symphisis pubic dysfunction pain, heartburn), so I shouldn't complain, and I'm not!  I feel very blessed and lucky to be given this opportunity to bring life into this world and to create a little human made up of me and my beloved.  I know this is a wonderful position to be in.

However, I was/am HIGHLY unprepared for the sheer physicality of pregnancy.  I guess I never thought about the stresses on the body, and how much it takes to grow a human. Hollywood makes it look so damn easy.

AND I've got labour to look forward to, which I hear is like running a marathon that you can never fully prepare for.  :)

As for the stretch marks which prompted me to write this post, I know they will fade, and I know that they are a small price to pay for Baby.  Hubby was wonderful about them but I suspect I could grow a second head and he would still love me just as much (or even more, seeing as I would have a second head I could devote solely to him!).   I am very lucky and I will definitely get over it.  Just needed to vent.  The hormones don't help either with rational reasoning skills at present.

Seeing as the current car I am driving is a teeny hatchback from 2002 with a three star safety rating, we decided to get a new car with a higher safety rating and with enough room in the boot for a pram.  Hubby spent many many hours researching cars and calling sellers and we spent a few days visiting dealerships and test driving. I am very grateful to him as I have zero patience for the car buying process.

We had, with the help of research and some very excellent and knowledgeable friends, narrowed down the list of potential cars to:
1. Nissan Dualis
2. Hyundai ix35
3. Honda CRV
4. Mazda CX5
5. Kia Sportage

There are pros and cons to each of these cars but we ended up with a 2012 model Mazda CX5 from a private seller for a GREAT price.  GO HUBBY!

We pick him up tomorrow and I am very excited to be driving a fancy new car and to install the baby seat into him!

Baby is kicking a lot these days - mostly during the early morning and also within work hours.. He/she tends to be quite camera shy and stops kicking/ moving/ somersaulting as soon as I switch on the camera. Finally managed to film some movement! It's an amazing and comforting feeling to feel your child moving about inside you- but also very strange to think there's a tiny human inside my abdominal cavity.. ;)

DH and I went out for date night last night (only 6 more weekends until we date nights become very hard! OMG). 2 hours after a huge Chinese banquet (my weekly cheat meal!), I test my blood sugar and it's higher than it should be (7.8) I was sad so DH agreed to test his blood sugar too, to support me. He offensively tested in the 5's and then was walking around with a tissue pressed to his finger saying, "I have a WOUND!". LOL - I have to stab myself a minimum of 4 times a day you big baby!  It's lucky men aren't the ones who have to go through pregnancy and childbirth - the human species would have been a goner!!!

Baby today! My blood sugar levels have been great, and mummy's bump and baby looks the right size (according to Chris). Growth scan in two weeks!

We are trying to train our fur-kids before Baby comes - this includes:
1) no dogs on the couch
2) baby toys are not dog toys
3) getting them used to baby sounds (we downloaded them from the internet)
4) Mummy carrying around the faux pretend baby (see above pic) and trying to do things one handed.
5) pram training - taking the dogs on walks with the pram.  We almost took the doll with us too one day but thought that made us look a little...odd.
6) no jumping up
7) no barking at arriving humans

I agree with you that this list is LONG and Baby is coming in 8 short weeks.  They have been pretty good so far however, and I hope they will embrace the littlest member of the pack with open paws!

Hand made hot air balloons for baby to look at whilst nursing. I'm not gonna lie- they took a while!!

The pattern is from Etsy - and I used both my new sewing machine and hand stitching.

I love how they look in the corner of the nursery - they are above my nursing glider.

Just burst into tears trying to comprehend how to do my tax. :(

Baby is very active in the early morning- hope he /she is not establishing that as a routine!!!
